Denmark is the smallest of the Nordic countries with an area of 43,094km2, and has a population of 5,415.978. The country boarders the Baltic Sea and is made up of almost 400 hundred islands, such as Funen, Zealand, and Bornholm. The waters that the islands set in are known as the Danish Archipelago. Germany is the country's only land locked boarder and this area is referred to as Jutland. Greenland and the Faroe Isles are all Crown territories of Denmark, which have home political rule.
The majority of Denmark's population is of Scandinavian decent and also small groups of immigrants as well as Inuit who derive from Greenland. The last census conducted in 2003 show that immigrants make up 6.2% of the Danish population.
The Danish language is spoken through the entire country. There are some areas near the German border were German is spoken mainly as a second language. Denmark is the same as all its Nordic neighbours in teaching English at school and many Danes you will find are totally fluent in English.
Denmark also has the oldest monarchy in Europe and in 1849 it became a constitutional monarchy. Margaret II is the present Monarch of Denmark her powers are mostly ceremonial as the Prime Minister exercises the executive power.
The Danish Parliament, which is known as the Folketing, has a total of 179 members. Elections in parliament must take place within every four years. However as in England the Prime Minster can call for an earlier election if he so wishes. If the Danish parliament were to hold a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister then the entire government would also be forced to resign. For long periods of Denmark's political history the country is run by minority governments.
Counties of Denmark
The country of Denmark is broken up into 13 counties, which are then broken down into 271 municipalities. There is new legislation at the moment waiting to come into effect that will replace the original counties. The change will mean that there will be only five new regions and also reduce the municipalities down to 98.
The new reforms will be implemented on the 1st January 2007. The new municipalities will have populations of about 20,000.
Denmark's Economy
The Danish economy is a strong and vibrant economy, and is also highly unionised with 75% of the working population members of a union. The relationship between union's and employees works very well, with unions having a hand's on day to day approach.
The union and the employer mostly deal with the negation of pay rises and very seldom is the government brought into the talks. The Danish people took a vote on a decision to join the other EU members in September 2000 and declined their invitation. Although they decided not to join the Danish currency the Krone is still linked to the Euro.
Denmark has been in first place for the last two years on the e-readiness rankings, which is, a chart measuring a countries internet based capabilities.
