Fired Up for Midsummer
Those who enjoy a nice roaring fire don't have to sit at home and wait for November 5th or the return of winter - they can head to Denmark in midsummer instead.
After the long, dark nights of winter the light evenings of summer come as a welcome relief to Scandinavians, which makes it little surprise that traditional celebrations mark the solstice on June 21st.
In Denmark as elsewhere in the Nordic countries, the traditional way of marking the shortest night is to light a bonfire in an open space, particularly close to water, such as on beaches.
While the short hours of darkness see the coastline lit up with these numerous impromptu beacons, visitors staying in cheap hotels can sit with a nice drink and enjoy the party atmosphere with lots of singing, in weather which should be a lot warmer than November in Britain.
