Those fascinated by the history of the Vikings and keen so see them acting out their heritage accurately without the spam and horned helmets have a great chance to do so in the Danish town of Frederikssund.
Held in late June and early July, the Frederikssund Vikingesspil takes place, a celebration of all things Viking in which stories from the era are re-enacted according to traditional folklore, with outdoor performances taking place in the long light evenings.
In addition to the performances, the published schedule of events includes a Viking banquet with plenty of meat, beer, maidens and bards, in addition to which there is a village market with Viking-themed goodies for sale.
Frederikssund has its own replica Viking settlement, which enables visitors to gain an insight into what living conditions were like all those centuries ago.
The area has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
