Tradition in Tallin

Tradition in Tallin Estonia's capital Tallinn plays host to the St Martin's Day fair from November 16th to the 19th, a major show of traditional dress and culture.

The festival, commemorating the life of the saint who was Bishop of Tours, is celebrated in several north European countries, with the date varying slightly from country to country as it replaced the local pagan festivals.

In Estonia, this merging of cultures and traditions manifests itself in a display of national culture, with folk art and music, traditional dress and life being the centrepiece of the fair, which according to the Tallinn Tourist office will be held in the Saku arena.

Tallinn offers a fascinating historical panorama, from the red turrets and spires of the medieval quarter to the imposing Soviet architecture, including the TV tower with its viewing platform 170 metres up, while the Estonian cultural theme is emphasised by the open air museum.

Visitors will find plenty of accommodation in Tallinn, including cheap hotels.
