The Republic of Finland is located in the Northeast of Europe. The country has a population of 5 million and the largest city is Helsinki. The country has land boarders with Sweden, Norway and Russia.
Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917 and a year later in 1918 on the 3rd of January the country was formally recognised.
Geography of Finland
Finland like its Nordic neighbour’s Sweden is made up of thousands of small lake’s islands and forests. Finland has a total of 187,888 lakes as well as 179,584 small islands. However one of Finland’s lakes, the lake at Saimaa is the fifth largest lake in Europe. The country in whole is largely flat with small hills in the north regions. The largest point in Finland is mount Haltitunturi that stands at 1,328 metres.
The other major natural contributor to Finland’s landscape is its forest that covers almost 68% of the country of which little of this is arable. Finland has a unique claim that it is one of the worlds few counties still growing according to research the growth is about 7 square kilometres a year. This is due to the isostatic uplift that has been taking place in the world since the iceage.
Finland's Climate
The climate in the south of Finland is that of a Northern European country, but the climate changes dramatically in the northern parts of Finland that are similar to arctic conditions.
At Finland’s north most point the sun does not set for a period of 73 days in the summer and during the winter does not rise for 51 days.
Finland's Economy
The Finnish economy is largely a free market economy with a highly industrialised market also. The standard of living in Finland is high as its Nordic neighbours Sweden and Norway. The main economic sector of Finland is based around areas such as wood, metal, engineering and electronics. With Nokia being one of the worlds leading electronic companies.
The exporting of forestry is also a major factor of the Finnish economy as well as a major employer for those living in rural areas of Finland. The country was voted second in a league of the lowest level of corruption in a country. Finland has a president and a Prime Minster but does not have a monarch like some of its Nordic friends. The acting Prime Minster at this present time is Matti Vanhanen, and the President is Tarja Halonen.
Finland's Demographics
The Finnish language is spoken by almost 92% of the country, with the remaining population speaking Swedish, Russian and Estonian.
In the far north of Finland in the Lapland area is were the Sami live and they total around 7,000 who speak a Finno- Ugric language. The Evangelical Lutheran Church accounts for about 84% of the Finnish population’s religious faith, there is a 1% minority who follow the Finnish Orthodox Church.
These are the two state churches of Finland, other group such as the Protestants, Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews as well as the unaffiliated make up the rest.
Most of Finland’s population is based around a few major cities such as Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Turku and Oulu.
