An Ice Way to Spend a Holiday
The basic idea is simple - find some ice, dig a hole through it into the open water and jump in.
Strangely enough as it may seem, this is seen as a very healthy and hearty activity in Finland, possibly even building up resistance to the common cold, with the Avantouinti Society being one of the organisations which sustains ice holes through the winter months for those who fancy trying out this activity, which, after all, they can then dare their friends to do.
Those with a heart condition are recommended to consult their doctor before taking the plunge.
Naturally enough for such a northern country, Finland does start to get rather cold and dark during the autumn, but it also offers plenty of good nightlife, food and cheap hotels.
It also has saunas everywhere for those who fancy bathing in slightly warmer conditions.
