Finfire Night

Finfire night Those who love their bonfires may find Easter an odd time to enjoy one, but on the small island of Seurasaari near Helsinki the locals have been doing it since 1982.

Although the tradition is fairly new, it has deep historical roots in folk tales about bonfires scaring off goblins and trolls, which are supposed to come out on Easter Saturday.

Naturally enough, plenty of little trolls will put in an appearance to sing and read poetry during the event.

The island also has an open-air museum, a beach and refreshments by day.

Back on the mainland, Helsinki has a wide range of attractions for visitors staying in cheap hotels.

Among these are the Upsenski Orthodox Cathedral, the largest of its type in the world, the National Museum of Finland and one of the world's oldest zoos.

Getting round the compact city is easy, with trams and one of the smallest underground systems in the world.
