Helsinki Celebrates Herring Catch

Helsinki celebrates herring catch The Finnish city of Helsinki will mark the end of the fishing season this year with its annual herring celebration.

Taking place in the city's Market Square, the Helsinki Herring Baltic Fair will see fisherman sell their catch of herring and sprat from 09:00 local time between October 7th and 13th.

Dating back to 1743, the free event has helped to regulate the price of herring on the Baltic since the end of the 19th century.

However, the Port of Helsinki states the range of produce available at the fair has increased beyond its customary offering of salted fish.

"As well as the traditional salted and pickled herring there are increasingly exotic herring marinades: lemon, rowanberry, cayenne pepper, and of course garlic," it explains.

Earlier this week, the City of Helsinki website said this summer is expected to be the city's busiest ever for tourists - some of which could be taking advantage of the cheap hotels in the capital.

It estimates that 770,000 people will visit the city, which is four per cent more travellers than were recorded in 2006.
