Hot-foot to Helsinki
August 2007 sees the Finnish capital Helsinki staging its annual marathon, which will offer those feeling ultra-fit the chance to not only enjoy the achievement of running 26 miles and 385 yards, but also see the finest landmarks of the city in the process.
Run on August 18th, the race begins at the statue of great Finnish Athlete Paavo Nurmi and ends at the adjacent Olympic Stadium.
In between, it winds round the city, passing numerous landmarks as it crosses bridges and encircles several lakes and waterways.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels may will also be able to enjoy the city at a slower pace, with major attractions including the vast Uspenski Cathedral, Korkeasaari Zoo and the National Museum of Finland, which provides a comprehensive account of Finnish history from the prehistoric to the present.
Those with sore feet will be glad to know the city is served by the world's northernmost underground rail system.
