Ice to See You

Ice to see you For the winter sport enthusiast who likes to get their skates on, there are no limits to how far they can go at the Finland Ice Marathon, held between February the 14th and 18th on the frozen Lake Kallavessi in the city of Kuopio.

The festival starts with a short children's event, followed by more serious 100 and 200 kilometre races for leading race skaters.

On the final day, the tour skaters get their chance, choosing just how far and fast they want to go as they glide across the frozen surface.

Like any marathon, there will be experts who whiz away into the distance, while others can take the route at their own pace.

Apart from the skating, the city of Kuopio offers plenty for visitors staying in local cheap hotels.

It has steamy spas to ward off the winter chill, museum and art galleries, plus great views from the observation tower on Puijo Hill, overlooking the city.
