Jazzing Up the Frozen North
A country that won the Eurovision Song Contest with a monster rock band may not be the first place visitors associate with jazz, but those who prefer saxophones to electric guitars should take note: the town of Tampere is host to its own jazz "Happening" From November 2nd-6th.
This is the 25th year of the annual event, which has featured many top musicians playing over the years, such as Ornette Coleman and Evan Parker.
Tampere is the third largest city in Finland with around 200,000 inhabitants, and is large enough to offer plenty of accommodation with lots of cheap hotels.
It offers some surprising attractions, with two vineyards nearby as well as plenty of natural beauty, with the city lying on an island between two lakes.
Other attractions in the city include the Arboretum and the Tammerkoski Rapids, whose water was the basis of the establishment of Tampere as an industrial city.
The Seitsmann and Helventinjarvi national parks are also close to the city.
