Lapp It Up
For those who really love nature, the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, are one of the great wonders of the winter sky, with the dark nights of Lapland providing the perfect setting.
The phenomenon sees a spectacular display of multicoloured wavy lights swirling, hanging and streaming across the sky in a strange, ethereal way, which has inspired a great deal of myth and legend but is now known to be the action of particles in the atmosphere interacting with the Sun's magnetic field.
Lapland makes a good location to see the phenomenon at this time, partly due to its northerly latitude, since places like Scotland are less likely to see the aurora when the sun is at the lower end of it's cycle, plus the fact that the region lies in a remote corner of Europe far from the polluting lights of major towns and cities.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the region can also enjoy Lapp culture, winter sports and wildlife.
