France receives around 70 million visitors a year almost doubles that of the second most popular tourist country of Spain.

France's hotel industry continues to grow at pace with the increase in number of tourists, with world famous hotels stretching from Paris to Nice offering 5 star service throughout France. Historic Route

There are two favourite routes that visitors can follow if they so wish. One of these is the Historic Route that criss- crosses across France from one end of the country to the other based on cultural importance. The Historic Routes try’s to cover famous people, artists, monuments, and religious buildings. This route is not that old and only dates back until the 1970’s. The “route historique “ has now been trade marked in 1989. The success of this historic route continues to grow at a pace and since 2000 the Fedearation Nationale des Routes has helped hugely.

Just a few of the favourite sites on the Historic route are Abbaye de Royaumont this abbey was founded in 1228 by Louis IX and is a reminder of France’s royal origins. CDT Drome this is considered by many to be the most beautiful castle in the provincial area of Drome. The beautiful Chateau De Cheverny with its fantastic gardens and 17th century tapestries. And finally the Chateau de Conde- Demeure des Princess set in its own parkland with three hundred old years’ trees.

Tourist Route

The second route is called the Tourist route these routes are often devised by committee of a region department, or sometimes by a group of craftsmen and traders.

Within the tourist route you can also choose whether you want to follow landscapes such as the route of stone and water in Brittany staying in some of its famous hotels on route. You can also follow the route of the Vallee du Cher in the centre. There are routes that follow craftsmen such as the Mariners or the timber Raftsmen in Burgundy. And of course a very popular route is that of following in the footsteps of not only Frances most famous person but also some of the worlds most influential also. Those include artist such a Cézanne, and Emperors like Napoleon. There is a wealth of hotels located along both the tourist route and the historic route allowing you to stay in hotel’s of all classes depending on your budget.

And of course France's parts in defining Europe today, with reminders of the wars fought on French soil everywhere to be seen.

The two great world wars are still in everybody’s memories but there are spectacular sites stretching as far back as the Roman days to enjoy.

Some of the most popular visited sites are in the Ardennes and in the east of France. The first great world war of 1914-1918 is illustrated on the fields of Picardy, and the Somme. The beaches of Normandy that were used as landing areas for the allied forces that would German occupation of France for ever. Two of the best memorial museums that help tell the story of the Second World War are at Peronne, and Calvados.

Regions and Landscapes

France has 22 administrative regions within its borders. The landscapes can vary widely between the North and the South. Generally speaking North of the Loire they open out into the plains of Normandy with its abbeys and military sites. Then there is Brittany with its wild coastline of chalk cliffs, and the gentleness of the Loire valley.

The south part of France can offer Alps and there snowy peaks that descend into the psalm’s and beaches of the Mediterranean with cities such as Nice and Marseilles attracting visitors all year round.

France's World Heritage Sites

France has a total 29 natural and cultural world heritage sites by UNESCO. There are total 730 protected sites of both cultural and natural importance in France. Religious edifices constitute a large part of world heritage sites France has 4 cathedrals distinguished by UNESCO these are at Chartes, Amiens, Bourges and Reims. All are master buildings from the 12th and 13th century in gothic style. Historic sites are also part of the cultural heritage of humanity. Below are just a few sites that are strongly recommended to visit Abbaye de Fontenay in Burgundy that was founded by St. Bernard in 1118 and stands today in perfect condition. The Avignon Tourisme France and the worlds biggest Gothic Palace. Chateau de Versailles standing within its 850 hectares of lakes and fountains, gardens and woods.
