Abbey Great Time
With Christmas starting to loom on the horizon, the Christmas Fair at the Abbey Chaalis in Picardy provides an excuse to take a trip to France.
Taking place every November, this year's date to be confirmed, the fair features over 40 stallholders selling fine wines and champagne, local foods such as foie gras and Picardy macaroons, along with clothes, jewellery and other items.
As well as the fair, the eighth century abbey itself is a major tourist attraction, featuring frescoes and a museum, which includes a gallery containing busts of the famous philosophers Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire.
The Picardy region has many attractions for visitors.
Conveniently located between the Channel Coast and Paris, the region is famous for its wines and food, scenery, gothic buildings and war history, the last of which includes the site of the WWI battle of the Somme.
