With warm summer days a fading memory many places will be vying for winter tourists, with Avignon offering a warm Mediterranean alternative to the snow and rain in the St Andre Fair, held from late November to early December (dates to be confirmed).

The fair offers visitors the chance to sample and buy a variety of goodies, from chocolate and cheese to more expensive items such as truffles.

It also offers a variety of arts and crafts, making this a good time to get some Christmas shopping done.

As well as the fair, Avignon offers lots of attractions for tourists.

Designated a world heritage site, the town is famous for its architecture, which includes such buildings as Pont Saint-Bénezet and the Palais des Papes, as well as a number of museums focusing on life and buildings from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

The wider Cote D'Azur offers a mild Mediterranean climate and is famous for its wines.

Avignon has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
