Balloon Hits Skies Above Paris
A tethered gas balloon has been launched into the sky above Paris that provides useful information on air quality as well as serving as a tourist attraction.
People staying in cheap hotels in Paris will be able to get a close look at the balloon at the Parc Andre Citroen in the city's 15th arrondissement, although it is also visible from more than 20km away.
The giant inflatable orb is the creation of Aerophile of France and uses a lighting system to provide real-time reports on atmospheric pollution.
After checking the air for various contaminants the balloon displays different colours which relate to different levels of pollution, ranging from red for highly polluted air to green for very clean air.
The balloon is filled with some 6,000 cubic metres of helium and is tethered to the ground using a movable cable controlled by a hydroelectric winch.
Up to 30 passengers at a time can board the balloon and be carried to an altitude of 150 metres above Paris, offering excellent views of the picturesque city.
