Boats and Booms for Bordeaux Bastille
Bordeaux is to burst into life on July 13th 2006, as the city celebrates the eve of Bastille Day.
The city, with its beautiful artwork and distinguished waterfront, will burst into colour, as fireworks light the night sky.
A barge will travel along the Garonne river, firing pyrotechnics into the air, while open air dancing and partying will take place on dry land.
Bastille Day, which was declared a national holiday in 1880, is celebrated in cities across France and is a major day of celebration for their inhabitants.
The event marks the end of the monarchy and the beginning of its First Republic and the French Revolution, after the storming of the Bastille in 1789.
A symbol of the absolute power which Louise 16th, regime commanded over France, the Bastille was a fearsome sight for those oppressed.
Although only a few prisoners were detained at the time of the revolution, storming the Bastille was a symbolic political gesture of great magnitude, which is still reflected on today.
