Celebrate Until the Cows Come Home
Autumn in the French Alps may mean getting the skis put for some, but for farmers in the town of Annecy it's the time of a grand homecoming – for their cows.
On October 7th, Le Retour des Alpages takes place, with crowds lining the streets and cowbells clanging as the herders parade their cattle through the town on the way down from the mountains for the winter.
In true carnival style, the cows are decorated with a variety of bright costumes and the parade is accompanied by a wide array of local dairy produce.
Annecy itself has plenty more to offer: its own lake, medieval buildings including monasteries and churches, mountain trails and distant white capped peaks.
Beyond the town, the Rhone-Alpes region has a wider variety of attractions, from skiing in resorts such as Megev and Chamonix to guided tours up Mont Blanc.
The town has plenty of accommodation options, including cheap hotels.
