Contemporary Dance in the City of Love

Paris' international forum for classic and contemporary dance, Les Etes de la Danse, has begun on July 3rd 2006.

The festival, which invites a different dance company to perform each year, features the Alvin Ailey American Dance theatre this summer.

Taking place outside the beautiful and architecturally iconic Hotel de Rohan in the Marais, the event will run until July 23rd.

The main body of the performance is a series of ballets, with Night Creature, Hidden Rites and Revelations taking place among others on the opening night.

Alvin Ailey was born in 1931, beginning his studies in tap and primitive dance at the age of 12.

Later in life, after establishing himself in New York as a dance teacher, Mr Ailey recruited a troupe of African-American dancers, which formed the basis of his dance theatre in 1958.

Throughout his career he stated his desire to "break down the wall between audience and artist", attempting to make the medium more accessible to the public.

Since his passing in 1989, the company has carried on his legacy.
