Debate Continues over Proposed Tourism Minister

Debate continues over proposed tourism minister Debates have continued this week over the proposal of implementing a tourism minister to represent the needs of British holidaymakers and the UK tourism industry.

During a Tourism Question Time at the Best of Britain and Ireland Travel Trade Forum yesterday (March 17th), Margaret Hodge, minister for culture, creative industries and tourism, said: "Just calling somebody the tourism minister will not in any way transfer the punch that tourism already has within government."

Ms Hodge argued that her role already involved issues surrounding the tourism sector.

However, John Lewis, chair of the Conservative Tourism Taskforce, said that Britain needed a "strong voice" for such a large industry.

"We need to have someone representing the industry, protecting the industry against enormous increases and charges for visas," he said.

These comments came after the industry body ABTA proposed the need for a dedicated tourism minister earlier this week.

It is hoped that the role would represent travellers in government over issues including high taxes when they book a cheap hotel in Paris or similar.
