Escape to Dunkirk

Escape to Dunkirk Mention the Dunkirk spirit and some will hark back to the famous 1940 evacuation, while others will think of the contents of their boot after a booze cruise to the town, but there is a third, distinctly local version.

This spirit is one of fun and tradition, demonstrated in the annual Dunkerke Carnaval, which takes place on February 18th, when a costumed giant, Reuze Papa, makes his way at the head of a procession through the streets to mark the end of the pre-lent season.

In Dunkirk on this day, men are women and women are men, with the costumes providing almost as much amusement as the sudden spraying of water and throwing of fish into the watching crowds.

Visitors enjoying the event can make it over on the ferry from Dover for a day, but those staying in cheap hotels in the area have plenty more to see and do.

Chief among these is the Dunkirk memorial, which, along with the small museum called the Memorial du Souvenir, commemorates the famous occasion when 330,000 troops were taken safely home to fight on for freedom, democracy and the right to stage great carnivals.
