French Firework Extravaganza to Rock Cannes

Cannes is set to host the fireworks event, le Festival d'Art Pyotechnique this August, with a display of colour and music set to burst into the night sky.

The shows, given 330 metres from the seafront, will provide reflected views and an interesting acoustic relief, transporting the viewer into a "fairytale world of successive frames", the organisers claim.

Competitors from around the world will battle it out in a bid to wow the crowds, with August's events taking place on the 7th, 15th and 24th.

The jury will judge the entrants on the musical backing provided and the way in which the colours and sounds mesh to create an overall effect for the spectator.

Organisers promise a "particularly warm welcome" to visitors, who may wish to stay in one of the city's cheap hotels or opt for something more luxurious.

Cannes has been renowned as a pioneer for 'pyromusical' events since 1967, when the city founded a competition in which competitors could tell a story with fireworks and a musical score.
