French Open to See Record Prize
Golf fans may be packing their bags and heading to Paris this week, as the French Open is set to start.
Beginning on June 29th and ending on July 2nd 2006, the tournament is set to attract the cream of Europe's golfers, including Jose Maria Olazabal, Henrik Stenson and England's own David Howell.
Celebrating it's 100th anniversary, this year's even will feature record prize money for the lucky winner, with some 4 million (£2.8 million) will be up for grabs
Jean-Francois Remesy, last year's winner, will be hoping to retain the prize, but faces stiff competition as the contestants battle not just for cash, but for glory.
For European stars there is more at stake than just financial reward, as the top ten players are automatically selected for the European team to play against the US in the Ryder Cup.
Spectators to the event who are not mesmerised by the golf may notice that the course contains some of largest carp in France, fed almost exclusively of the grass clippings from the golf course.
