Ham It Up

Ham it up Those who like their gastronomic trips may find Aquitane in south-western France the place to go in April as the Bayonne Ham Fair takes place.

Held over the Easter period (exact dates to be confirmed), the festival sees the traditional meaty display taking place to find the best Bayonne ham of that year, according to the French Food Freaks site.

As might be expected, the fair includes a wide range of food and drink stalls, with music and partying.

Visitors staying in the town, after which the bayonette (a knife attached to rifles for close-range fighting) is named, will find plenty more to see and do as well.

The Basque culture and language is well represented in the town, with the Basque museum and traditional bullfights.

Aquitane also has fine beaches on the Bay of Biscay coast, particularly at nearby Biarritz, while the wineries of Bordeaux lie to the north and the Pyrenees to the south.
