Have a Fiery Good Time
Everyone has heard of New Orleans with its French Quarter, but the Original Orleans is not only 100 per cent French: it hosts a festival dedicated to one of the most famous women in France's history.
The Joan of Arc Festival, running from April 1st to May 31st, commemorates the siege of the city between 1428 and 1429, during the hundred years war, when the lady, never one to flinch when the heat was on, liberated Orleans.
As a result, the festival takes on a medieval theme, with dress, music and activities that befit the era and a spectacular last Sunday in which 2,000 people in period costume march Joan of Arc through the streets.
Apart from the festival, Orleans also honours the saint with numerous monuments and statues, including in the Cathedrale Ste Croix, the grand neo-gothic Cathedral that is one of the chief architectural features of the city.
Orleans also has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
