Nearly 2m Brits Plan Escape This Weekend
Abta - The Travel Association is predicting a "May bank holiday getaway" over the coming weekend, with some 1.8 million British people expected to leave the country.
Spain is expected to be the most popular destination with people setting off between May 22nd and 25th, a long weekend that also marks the start of the school half-term break.
Cheap hotels in Paris are set to prove a popular option, with the French capital one of the top five city destinations for the coming weekend, along with Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome and New York.
Travellers heading further afield will show a preference for holiday hotspots including Florida, Egypt and Turkey, according to Abta.
Justin Fleming, president of the association, said: "In spite of the recession, passenger numbers this bank holiday weekend are very healthy, showing that the British love affair with foreign travel is as strong as ever."
Abta released a study earlier this year which highlighted the extent to which British people value their holidays, showing that 66 per cent gain a "huge emotional high" from their summer getaway.
