No Sham About Chamonix
Of all the Alpine resorts, Chamonix has an advantage, being proudly situated at the foot of the highest mountain in the range, Mont Blanc, so naturally the town has no plans to come second in other ways, least of all in its carnival.
The event takes place on March 1st, with a huge fancy dress parade through the streets of the town.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area are free to join in the fun, so it may be a good idea to pack a fancy dress costume along with the hat, gloves and skis.
Apart from the carnival, Chamonix has plenty for lovers of the Alps.
Skiing and winter sports are abundantly available, while the attraction of Mont Blanc is irresistible to mountaineers, its summit being, at 15,774 feet, the highest in western Europe, although it should be noted that winter climbs are best left to experienced and well equipped climbers.
