Paris Hosts Tragic Opera

Paris hosts tragic opera Travellers staying in cheap hotels in Paris can enjoy some high-end culture this month as the tragic opera Werther is to be performed at the city's Opera Bastille.

Jules Massenet's opera, a tale of obsession, love and death, has been staged for a new audience by Benoit Jacquot, who first showcased his production at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

This is the first time the Opera Bastille has hosted performances of the opera.

Michel Plasson will direct the production, sung in its original French. The opera is based on the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and was first performed in Vienna in 1892.

It tells the tale of a poet, obsessed with the already-betrothed Charlotte. Through his letters, Charlotte begins to love him but the two can never be together. The poet's love grows to dangerous heights and the opera ends as he tragically kills himself.

Werther plays from January 14th until February 1st.
