Pompidou to Pay Tribute to Georges Rouault

Pompidou to pay tribute to Georges Rouault Paris' Pompidou Centre is currently hosting a tribute to the highly influential and distinctive painter Georges Rouault.

The modern art museum is the holder of the world's largest collection of Rouault's work and organised the exhibition to mark the 50th anniversary of the artist's death.

People staying in cheap hotels in Paris can see the display, which includes 20 of Rouault's paintings, until October 13th.

Rouault was known for his depictions of evocative subjects such as women in front of mirrors, sad-faced clowns and sparkling landscapes.

He was a contemporary of artists such as Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet and would often paint prostitutes who would come into his studio to warm up, as he did not have the money to pay for models.

Until March 2009, the Pompidou Centre will display the masterpieces of its collection as part of two new chronological exhibitions, comprising over 1,300 works covering the fourth and fifth floors.
