Return of the X-Men
For those who love extreme sports, the X-world festival at the French Alpine resort of Morzine-Avoriaz may be just what they are looking for.
Held in January (date to be confirmed) the event is a spectacular exhibition of racing for adrenalin junkies as brave (or mad) people hurtle down or over the slopes on skis, parachutes or surfboards.
The highlight is the Hauts-Forts derby, with a dramatic steep descent of 1,000 metres off piste as racers hurtle down in pursuit of the Julbo trophy.
While visitors staying in cheap hotels at the resort can enjoy the death-defying spectacle, the area has plenty more for visitors to see and do.
Conventional winter sports of all kinds are there for all, while easier journeys can be made by the Pleney Cable Car and the mountain scenery can be enjoyed from any location.
The village also has plenty of places to eat and shop.
