Runners set sights on Paris Athletes, fitness fanatics and charity runners from all over the world will be training their sights on the boulevards and avenues of Paris as the city prepares to host its annual marathon.

As with most major city marathons, this run provides participants with an opportunity to take in some of Paris' most famous and attractive landmarks.

People staying in cheap hotels in Paris can find the start of the marathon, which takes place on April 6th, on the world famous Champs-Elysees.

Runners progress past the main monuments in the centre of the city, including the Rue de Rivoli, the Concorde and the Place de la Bastille, before heading for Auteuil and eventually finishing on Avenue Foch.

The Paris Marathon was first held on July 19th 1896 and included just 191 participants.

It was run over the 40 kilometres separating Paris from Conflans, a distance that was based on the fact that the ancient city of Marathon was 40 kilometres away from Athens.
