Storm the Bastille for the Modern Art Fair

Paris' Place de la Bastille is famous for many reasons but later this year it will be a modern art fair that attracts most visitors to the area.

The biannual Grand Marche de l'Art Contemporain will be held in the square between April 29th and May 4th.

More than 500 artists gather for this significant event, along with around 40,000 art lovers to browse the myriad creations on show.

People staying in cheap hotels in Paris will find that the streets of the Bastille are full of artworks of every kind, including canvases, ceramics and installations by some of the city's most fresh and exciting talents.

The theme of this year's fair will be horses, while the autumn event, which will be held in October and November, will focus on cartography.

Paris' Place de la Bastille is most famous for being the location of the notorious Bastille stronghold, a prison which held such famous inmates as the Marquis de Sade, Voltaire and Marie Antoinette.

The storming of the Bastille was one of the occurrences that sparked the French Revolution and the date on which it happened, July 14th, is a national holiday in France.
