The Bottom Line
There are have been many heroic defences in the history of warfare, but perhaps none so unusual as the way a Nice bum saved a city from invasion by marauding Turks.
Back in 1543, the city of Nice was under siege when it is said that Catherine Segurane came up with the remarkable defensive tactic of baring her bottom at them, which so distressed and offended the invaders that they fled.
Whatever the truth about the event, this cheeky lady is celebrated on the 7th of September every year with a fete dedicated to her memory involving a procession and a laying of a wreath in the old town.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Nice will be able to see a monument to Ms Segurane as well as enjoying many other sights in this historic city on the Mediterranean coast.
These include a number of old churches and other historic buildings, plus the Promenade des Anglais, the seafront promenade which is a focal point of the city and offers plenty of entertainment and nightlife.
Due to its location, September will not be too late in the year for visitors to tan a bit of their own bare flesh.
