Travellers 'want to Spend Xmas on Holiday'

The majority of travellers would rather spend Christmas enjoying a stay in a hotel than visiting family, according to research.

Online community TripAdvisor polled 1,500 of its members and found that 75 per cent would prefer to stay at a hotel in an exotic location than visit the homes of their relatives over the festive period.

Hotels in Paris and New York both made it into the top five alternatives to spending a Christmas with family for respondents to the poll.

Las Vegas and London also appeared in the wishlist of top ten locations, as well as exotic destinations such as the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Maldives, Tahiti and Thailand.

Over a third of people in the TripAdvisor poll said that they plan to go travelling this Christmas to escape the stress of the festive season.

Michele Perry, director of communications for TripAdvisor, said: "The holidays are for spending time with family, but it appears many travellers want that quality time in moderation."
