Hotels in Germany

The country of Germany lies in the heart of Europe. A large country which is surrounded by countries on three sides and the northern end of the country bordering the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and Denmark. Germany's eastern side borders Poland and the Czech Republic, its southern side borders Austria and Switzerland and it's western side borders France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Germany is a leading country among the industrial nations and has had an extremely turbulent history with worldwide repercussions. The language spoken is German and their currency is the Euro. It has a population of about 82 million and the country covers approximately 350 thousand square kilometers.

Tourism and industry plays a major part in Germany's economy and they have held a position of tremendous financial strength within Europe, even throughout the turbulent years of the recent East and West German unification. Germany has many major attractive cities. Berlin is the capital city and the city of Bonn is locally known as the commercial capital. Munich is in the south of the country and is famous for its breweries and huge Beer Festival in October, which also attracts thousands of visitors.

Germany has a varied landscape of mountainous areas and flat lands with enormous agricultural benefits. The weather is moderately warm in the northern half of the land and hot in the southern half during the summer months. Winters in the northern half are generally extremely cold with snow and ice throughout the land.

The early years of Germany's history show that a succession of European tribes intermittently occupied and ruled this large country until the occupation of the Holy Roman Empire. From as early as 900, the Holy Roman Empire introduced the Roman Catholic Church to Germany's many duchies. During this period and up till the late 19th century, the borders of Germany have fluctuated and encompassed many surrounding nations and their lands.

An era called 'Grunderzeit' ensued during this time establishing alliances with its surrounding countries. The peace was not for long as Germany's Emperor William II, caused friction with his neighboring countries, with his imperialistic policies. Finally with the Austrian Crown Prince's assassination, a series of events led to World War I, lasting from 1914 to 1918. This huge, bloody conflict led to the loss of millions of lives, world wide and finally ended on Armistice Day on, the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, in 1918, a day which is still commemorated in present day throughout the world, lest we forget. Unbelievably, a few years later, saw the rise of an ambitious German politician, Adolph Hitler, whose dictatorship and dominance led to a Second World War.

World War II ran from 1939 to 1945, with the annihilation and murder of millions of ethnic groups in Germany and the surrounding occupied countries. Hitler's basic plan was for a greater Germany by any means, but soon world leaders realised that this ambitious man could not be appeased with small increases in Germanys borders. His invasion into surrounding countries would soon spread worldwide; hence, the Second World War began with horrific consequences and losses of millions of lives, which still reverberate in present day life.
