As You Leip It

As you Leip it Leipzig has emerged from its past as part of the old East Germany as a city where festivities are always on the agenda, rarely more so than in the summer.

The Leipzig City Festival is the biggest, though not the only one of these held from June 1st to the 3rd this year, when the whole inner city is turned into a giant party zone with music, food and art combining to produce an event for all the family.

According to the local tourist authority, the event will include an artistic display outside the Museum of Fine Arts with an emphasis on seeing building work from a different angle, while the stage outside St Nicholas's Church sees the closing programme of performances taking place.

Apart from the festivities, Leipzig offers not only cheap hotels but many other inexpensive things, with the City Mayors survey in 2006 listing it as the cheapest city in Europe.

Fans of classical music should enjoy St Thomas's Church, where Bach composed most of his music and which hosts a museum dedicated to his life and works.
