Berlin Celebrates Year of the Reef

Berlin celebrates year of the reef People staying in cheap hotels in Berlin this summer will be able to join in with celebrations of the international year of the reef at the Museum of Natural History.

The natural beauty of coral reefs and the abundance of wildlife they attract means they are of enormous importance to the fisheries and tourism industries, as well as coastal protection and climate research.

Environmental change and human action have had a damaging effect on reefs across the world, however, and more than 20 per cent of the natural formations have already been lost.

A special exhibition at Berlin's Museum of Natural History, which will be open throughout the summer season, will look at past and present reef systems and highlight recent advances in human understanding of the natural structures.

One of the central themes of the show will be the relationship between climate change and the threat posed to biological diversity.

Visitors to the museum, which is based at Humboldt University, will be able to explore collections of more than 30 million zoological, palaeontological and geological objects.
