Boats of War

Those who feel that boat races should be spruced up a bit with a bit of knockabout gamesmanship may just love the Stocherkahnrennen punt race, which takes place on the Neckar River at Tubingen in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in June (date to be confirmed).

With crowds watching the spectacular from the bank the various teams, some in fancy dress, punt their boats down the course, with the critical part coming when the boats reach the Eye of the Needle, a narrow stretch where anything goes to get through ahead of other boats.

Non-Germans can enter, with last year's event being won by the orange-clad Flying Dutchmen, who won the suckling pig and lots of beer as a prize, while those who came last had to perform the traditional duty of each drinking a litre and a half of cod liver oil.

As such race features have yet to be incorporated into the Oxford v Cambridge boat race, those staying in cheap hotels in Tubingen can be sure of seeing, or even being part of, a race with a difference.
