Cologne to Host Firework Spectacular

The city of Cologne will host the largest fireworks display in its history in synchronicity with musical accompaniment this year.

Kolner Lichter will take place on the river Rhine on July 12th, with the first explosion scheduled to illuminate the sky shortly before 19:00.

The fireworks will be lit from ships on the water as they pass by the old quarter of the city.

People staying in cheap hotels in Cologne will be able to enjoy the spectacle from a number of locations, including riverside terraces or the decks of boats on scheduled tours.

This annual event is one of the German city's most popular attractions and in recent years has welcomed some 800,000 spectators.

Cologne is the largest city in Germany's Rhine-Ruhr region and boasts a number of landmarks that evoke its rich history, such as its famous Gothic cathedral – construction of which began in the 13th century – and churches that have roots stretching back to Roman times.
