Discover Darwin's Influence on Art
Charles Darwin may not be a figure immediately associated with art, but visitors to Frankfurt next year will be able to learn all about the influence that he has had on many artists.
From February 5th to May 3rd, the Germany city's Schirn Kunsthalle will host an exhibition entitled Darwin: Art and the Search for Origins.
The display will bring together a number of pieces of art that were directly inspired by Darwin's book On the Origin of Species, which was published in 1859.
As well as reacting directly to the great scientist's theories of natural evolution, artists took inspiration from the often passionate reactions to Darwin's ideas from his supporters and critics.
Examples include a painting by the American artist Martin Johnson, who explored Darwin's ideas by presenting an image of nature as a bank which has a beautiful appearance but is the location of a vicious fight for survival.
The surrealist artist Max Ernst was also inspired by Darwin's theories, creating paintings and collages that questioned the origins of life and pondered the future of mankind.
