Don't Diss Dixie

Don't diss Dixie Jazz fans looking for some fun in May can find it in the city of Dresden, which hosts the International Dixieland Festival from May 9th to the 13th 2007.

Those unfamiliar with the notion of the famous German city hosting this style of music may be surprised to learn that this is the 37th time the event has been held, which means there is a tried and tested formula which visitors staying in cheap hotels in the city should enjoy.

Held at various venues, from the Kulturplatz to the city's zoo, Dixieland sees bands such as The Hot Swingers, 2Hot and Boogie Radio from Germany and a number of other bands from around Europe such as Sweden's Soprano Meets Clarinet and Paris Washboard from France.

Apart from the jazz, the city of Dresden is a place of considerable historical interest.

Twinned with Coventry, the city, like its midlands counterpart, has been largely rebuilt after its wartime destruction, although many old palaces and castles survive, while the fact that it was part of East Germany after the war has seen communist architectural styles emerge with wide streets and squares, followed by a wave of post-modern structures since reunification.
