Enjoy a Medieval German Christmas

Enjoy a medieval German Christmas Modern-day consumerism means that Christmas has turned into something of a draining affair, on both the pocket and the mind, but those who wish to experience a slightly more traditional version of the festival should visit one of Germany's medieval markets.

Every year the town of Esslingen hosts a long-established Christmas market, with this year's event running from November 27th to December 22nd.

The event is known for its sense of individuality and uniqueness and consistently offers a wide range of products made by craftsmen and traders, from leather items and jewellery to artwork and calligraphy.

A middle-age theme is evoked throughout the event, with people dressed as jesters, knights and sorcerers scattered around the market and hearty fare cooked on open fires.

The town of Esslingen, which dates back to the year 777 AD, is the perfect location for this celebration of antiquity and tradition, with its cobbled streets and medieval fortifications.

It is also home to the parish church of St Dionysus, which includes Romanesque columns and stained-glass windows dating back to the 13th century as well as choir stalls that were built in 1514.

Esslingen lies in the Stuttgart region of south Germany and is almost equidistant from Frankfurt and Munich, both of which offer visitors a choice of cheap hotels.
