Frankfurt's Festival of Fun

Frankfurt's festival of fun Though most know it as an ultra modern German economic and banking hub, Frankfurt-am-Main shows a different side at its annual street festival, which will take place between August 4th and 7th 2006.

The festival stretches along the banks of the beautiful river Main, in the heart of the city, and dates back to celebrations of the fishing trade in the Middle Ages.

Traditional customs still found in evidence include spit-roasting oxen and making wine flow from the 'Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen' ('Justice Fountain').

True Frankfurt residents celebrate their heritage at the 'Gudd Stubb' on the Römerberg, as they have since the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor centuries ago.

In modern times, visitors are treated to miles of fairground rides, amusements, live music and beer tents. They can try their hand at a fishing competition or a windsurfing tournament, or escape for a breather to the city's summer gardens.

A regatta takes place on the river itself, with lanterns from the boats and fireworks from the bridges illuminating the festival at night.
