Harbour Burger

Harbour Burger Anyone imagining that northern Germany is a dull, grim industrial place cannot possibly have been to Hamburg, an oversight which could be put right in timely fashion by visiting the city between May 11th and the 13th 2007.

This period sees the Hamburg Harbour Birthday Festival, celebrating the long history of the city as a Hanseatic port, with a large harbour that has welcomed ships that have sailed down the Elbe since the 12th century.

According to the programme, the festival kicks off with the opening of the port promenade and a thanksgiving service in St Michaelis Church, the tallest in the city.

Following this is the grand arrival parade and an evening lightshow, with the 12th seeing a ballet followed by a fireworks display.

A grand departure parade on the 13th rounds the festival off, with the whole three days being a time for partying, food and drink.

Hamburg has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
