Holidaymakers 'to Stay Close to Home Next Year'

Holidaymakers 'to stay close to home next year' Cheap hotels in Frankfurt, Paris and other European cities could well prove popular next year as holidaymakers decide to stay close to home, it has been suggested.

Graham McKenzie, managing director of news provider TravelMole, said that one of the likely outcomes of the credit crunch is people limiting their travel to short- or medium-haul destinations.

He also suggested that Brits could abandon foreign travel altogether and spend their holidays in the UK.

"In 2009 I think people will start to look at places slightly closer to home, if not home itself, destinations in the UK and places that are close to home in the near continent," Mr McKenzie said.

The TravelMole director also mentioned the chance that ferry travel could rise in popularity as it gives people the option to "shove all their stuff in a car and just jump in with their kids and…go off to France, Germany or Spain".

"Those will be the popular destinations and also city destinations that still offer good value for money in terms of low cost flights," he added.

One of the factors that may discourage people from visiting European destinations, however, is the exchange rate, with the pound recently falling to record lows against the euro.
