Pancake Running in Berlin

Pancake running in Berlin For many people it is a constant search to find something interesting and original to do every New Year's Eve.

Well, for those that have not already heard of it, Berlin's annual endurance race must be one of the most unusual, if physically taxing, ways to mark December 31st.

The contest, known as the Pancake Race or the Berliner Silvesterlauf, is open in two, four, six, ten and 15-kilometre forms.

Runners set off from Waldschulallee and many dress up in bizarre and imaginative costumes, a choice which often turns out to be very wise, considering the sometimes freezing weather.

In 1978 the temperature fell to 18 degrees below zero and 20 centimetres of snow covered the ground, making the people dressed up as gorillas and giant teddy bears feel much better prepared than those in vests and running shorts.

The races take place between 12:15 and 3:30 in the afternoon local time, meaning that people staying in cheap hotels in Berlin will have time to recuperate and warm up before heading out for the evening celebrations.
