Riverbangs
Those who fancy something pretty hot on their travels can find it on the river Rhine in Germany at the end of April, at the Rhine in Flames festival.
On April 30th, visitors can enjoy the spectacle from the bank or cruise on a riverboat as they watch the evening sky lit up by a spectacular pyrotechnic display emanating from barges on the river.
All this happens near the town of Oberwesel, where there is an accompanying wine festival.
The theme continues into the following week, with the Bengal Night fireworks display taking place at seven venues along the river from Bonn to Linz.
While not enjoying the pyrotechnics and wine, visitors staying in cheap hotels in the vicinity have much else to do, not least the chance to visit the beautiful and historic city of Cologne, with its Roman ruins and famous cathedral.
