Run Up Lots of Steps in Berlin

Run up lots of steps in Berlin Running up an enormous staircase may not be many people's idea of a good time, but for those fitness freaks who enjoy setting themselves a challenge, Berlin is the place to be on January 8th.

A total of 465 steps must be scaled to reach the top of Germany's highest residential building - the Ideal-Hochhaus in Berlin's Gropiusstadt neighbourhood.

Runners are split into groups by age and gender before dashing up a total of 30 flights of stairs.

The current record is three minutes and 32 seconds, which equates to more than two steps a second.

Tower running is developing into something of a cult sport around the world, with this event modelled on the annual race to the top of the Empire State Building and the Petronas Towers in Malaysia also holding a race.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Berlin can watch the competitors exert themselves for no charge, while runners are required to pay up to €7 (£4.90).
