Swing Low Roman Chariot
Those who love their classical Roman films will have a good excuse to be in Berlin on September 23rd as the Trabrennbahn Karlshorst provides a re-enactment of the Ben Hur chariot race.
Part of a day of Roman-themed activities for all the family, the race is a spectacular highlight as riders in full dress hurtle round the course with their decorated horses pulling them at breakneck speed.
Just like the real Ben Hur film, it might be possible to spot a red sports car lurking incongruously in the background as all this is going on, although hopefully nobody will re-enact the scene in Spartacus where the holder of the title role is seen wearing a watch.
Apart from the Roman fun, there are plenty more historic things to see and do.
The district of Karlshorst itself hosts the German-Russian Museum, a former villa where the Germans surrendered at the end of the Second World War, while Berlin itself has many museums tracing the turbulent past of the city.
However, the German capital also has a vibrant modern cultural and nightlife scene, plus plenty of cheap hotels.
