For those with eclectic musical tastes, an unusual blend of classic and popular music is on offer at the Nokia Night of the Proms in Cologne in December (date to be confirmed).
The concert is held at the Kolnarena, with a mixture of orchestral music by the likes of Il Novocento mixing with popular music by Mike Oldfield and OMD.
As part of a series of concerts, the festival also travels through France and the low countries, where UB40 and Tears for Fears also take part.
Like the more classical Proms in Britain, it includes a hearty rendition of "Land of Hope and Glory".
Apart from the music, Cologne has many attractions for visitors.
It is famous both for its many beers such as Kolsch, as well as a vast number of Romanesque churches and fine nightlife.
Nearby Dusseldorf is regarded as a major fashion capital.
The city has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
